    Art and Individual Worth

    K. and I worked on her value project today for Individual Worth.  For those who might not know, our Young Women participate in a goal oriented program divided into different areas.  Once they complete a set number of goals in each area they need to also choose and complete a goal that illustrates each area and will take a minimum of 10 hours to finish.  K. wanted to do a scrapbook of the art she made in her art class this past year in school.  Instead of trying to cram each art piece in the scrapbook (some are quite large) she picked her favorites and I took photos of them.  (This also means I can share some of my favorites with you.)

    masks

The mask in the bottom right corner was made first and the others are “rubbings” are the original.

    tropical-rain-forest

A “Tropical Rain Forest” made of paper cutting and folding and marker/colored pencil.

    underwater-scene

An “Underwater Scene” made with cut paper, sequins and the dashed lines are thread stitching.  This one was on display in the office for a month.

    chinese-dragon

A “Chinese Dragon”.   I just love this one and the next one.

    paper-white-bird

Is this bird COOL or what?!  I just love this bird.

    K. loved this class last year.  I was her favorite class.  She loved showing us what she created.  She glowed.  And I loved working on this project with her.

  • It’s FINALLY here!

    vote

I spent the morning finalizing my research.  Like I hadn’t heard enough right?  I didn’t look at the presidential candidates.  My choice there was decided long ago.  State and local elections could be just as interesting where I am.  So I started with my local newspaper to view the whole cast of characters.  Some of them are indeed characters.  I read through lots of issues on a lot of websites and I’ve made my decisions.

This will be the first year that G. will get to vote as well.  It’s been cool watching him put his opinion together on what’s important to him and why he will vote.

So what’s important to you?  Whatever it isand whatever your decision… GO VOTE!  You matter.

  • Recovery, Halloween, elections, OH MY

    • Wow! That was Awesome!   (The children and teachers did an amazing job on the Primary Presentation!)

    •

    • Beads!  No more Beeeeads!!   (at that moment wishing that I’d cut the fringe and left it at that.)

  • Things My Grandma Tried to Teach Me

My Grandma was a woman who liked to do things. She was a strong woman who loved her family deeply. She lived most of my life in Southwest Virginia. When we would visit there where just some things you learned by being there.

    • Work isn’t a four letter word and it’s the most fun when you can do it while watching your Mom, Aunts & Uncles together.
    • While you’re at Grandma’s stock up on Apple Butter & Green Beans.  The Apple Butter was the best and for some reason I’m also remembering canned green beans.  Maybe because I really like Green Beans.
    • A garden is the best way to get the best vegetables.  And you have to tend it.  That takes work.  See the top of the list.
    • Roosters next door to Grandma’s house are going to wake you up at a time that only makes sense to them.  And you can’t go shoot him.  He doesn’t belong to Grandma.
    • Make sure if you have a big family reunion with almost all the Aunts and Uncles and cousins staying at Grandma’s that there is adequate plumbing.  It won’t be pretty otherwise.
    • Cow’s have an attitude.  Ok, Grandma didn’t teach me this.  This guy did….

    this-is-what-i-think-of-my-close-up1

    I guess he didn’t like his close-up.

    • You can be strong, opinionated and stubborn and still show those around you that you love them and be a lady through and through.

My Grandma was a neat lady.  I don’t think I’ve learned the most important lessons from her nearly like I should.  But I’m working on it.

  • I’m Doomed!

Kevin and I have a theory.  It’s one that began after we’d been married 15 years or so and now that we’ve hit 20 years it’s just kind of a running joke between the two of us.  We’re doomed.

You see, if, as we do believe, we are married for eternity and there’s nothing we’re going to do about that, then we might as well make the best of it in spite of each of our flaws and how they can tend to drive the other crazy.  Add in that there are times you’re driven cross-eyed and yet you still love the other person.  I couldn’t imagine spending eternity without him.

    See?  Doomed.

  • Speaking of K.

    k-aug-2008

We went to the local botanical gardens this week (another one of my favorite places to take photos) and she let me take a couple pictures.

  • Thanks, Lucy!

The following began when my children were much smaller.  (Think 3 and 4)

    “MOOOOooooooooo-ooooom!”

    “That’s not my name.”

    “It’s not?”

    “No, it’s Mrs. McGillicuddy.”

Most of the time by the time I reminded them about Mrs. McGillicuddy they’d forgotten what they were going to whine about and it made us smile.  Even better was when I refused to even answer to that long drawn-out extended call of Mo-om.  I would just say “Who?” and they would change it to “Mrs. McGillicuddy”.  And they simply didn’t want to take time to try and do the same thing with Mrs. McGillicuddy.  So, thank you, Lucy McGillicuddy Ricardo.  I hope you don’t mind me borrowing your maiden name.

  • Why I like Girl’s Camp

    Why I like Girl’s Camp

    • For one week a year the girls in our church have a chance to get together and just be themselves.
    • I have a teenage daughter who has learned much from being able to participate in this camp every year.  In spite of having a learning disability she has been accepted.  This year was her fourth year and they went on a 25 mile hike together over 3 days.
    • Being able to be just a bit silly myself sometime during this week.  Not one of the girls, but a little more relaxed than when your not camping.

    sunfire-1

    • Scenes like the one above early in the morning before any of the girls would even think of waking up.

PS – Things I don’t like: really LOUD birds with a rooster complex who think it’s their job to sing so the sun will rise!  It will do just fine without you for cryin’ out loud!  Give it up.
